Welcome to the ACLS HeartCode Renewal. If you are NOT an MD/DO, CRNA, PA/NP, ED/CCU RNs, or other experienced staff member with a minimum 2 years of ACLS experience, please contact us and we will add you to a course that is meant for you. Instructors may reschedule you to another date and class type if you are not appropriate for this class type.  

This course requires the completion of the ACLS HeartCode online modules prior to attending the in-person skills check portion course. Please bring a copy or picture of the full completion certificate to class as you will not be permitted to attend without it.

How do you obtain access to the ACLS HeartCode online modules?

To complete your BLS during this course, you must complete the BLS HeartCode online modules and bring the completion certificate to class.

Need to borrow a manual?  

(ANTHC employees only) Please check to see if your department has manuals to borrow. If not, you can borrow a manual from the Clinical Education Department manual library in the Education and Development Center (EDC), conference room 5. The EDC is located at 4115 Ambassador Drive, Anchorage, AK 99508 (the same building as the childcare center). EDC conference room 5 is accessible to employees via badge access 24 hours a day. 

Please remember parking is strictly enforced in the Inuit Parking lot (permit parking only), please park by the lake in the Consortium Office Building overflow lot.

The 1-Day ACLS Update Course is designed to teach you the lifesaving skills required to be both a team member and team leader in in-hospital and out-of-hospital settings. This in-person class is designed for previously certified individuals with experience/confidence using the AHA algorithms. The ACLS course covers extensive material in a brief time, and you will need to prepare for the course beforehand. 

Precourse Requirements 

You should prepare for class by doing the following: 

     Review and understand the information in your ACLS Provider Manual. 

     Review, understand, and pass the mandatory precourse self-assessment. 

     Ensure that your BLS skills and knowledge are current for the resuscitation scenarios. You will be tested on adult high-quality BLS skills using a feedback manikin during your ACLS course. You must know this in advance because you will not be taught how to do CPR or use an AED. If you would like to update/renew your BLS certification during your ACLS class, please email learning@anthc.org to request a link to the online BLS modules.

NRP 8th edition Advanced NRP Course Description

The Neonatal Resuscitation Program® (NRP®) course conveys an evidence-based approach to care of the newborn at birth and facilitates effective team-based care for healthcare professionals who care for newborns at the time of delivery. This course content delivers curricula for Advanced Providers who may participate in neonatal resuscitation beyond positive pressure ventilation.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this continuing medical education activity, participants should be able to:

  • Describe the physiologic changes that occur when the fetus makes the transition to extrauterine life.
  • State the steps to take when anticipating and preparing for the birth of a newborn.
  • Describe the initial steps of newborn care, including indicators for care at the radiant warmer including oxygen management and indications for CPAP.
  • State indicators for positive-pressure ventilation, signs that positive-pressure ventilation is inflating the lungs, ventilation corrective steps, and indicators for insertion of a laryngeal mask.
  • State the indicators for insertion of an endotracheal tube and the steps for preparation, insertion, securing, and assisting with this procedure.
  • State the indicators for initiating chest compressions, describe proper technique, and signs that indicate compressions may be discontinued.
  • State the indicators for epinephrine and volume expander and describe the proper techniques for administration and evaluation of this intervention.
  • State parameters for the use of post-resuscitation care.
  • Describe the strategies specific to resuscitation and stabilization of the preterm newborn.
  • Describe management of the newborn whose clinical status requires special consideration, such as airway complications and lung abnormalities, congenital anomalies, and complications due to maternal opiate or anesthesia exposure.
  • Describe the ethical principles associated with newborn resuscitation, what to do when a baby dies, and how to support parents and staff through the grieving process.
  • Recognize the principles of neonatal resuscitation.
  • Identify the need for resuscitation and how to provide initial steps of resuscitation.
  • Identify the knowledge and equipment essential to determine and provide positive pressure ventilation.
  • State the knowledge and skills essential to provide chest compressions during neonatal resuscitation.
  • Name the indications and skills needed to provide endotracheal intubation during neonatal resuscitation.
  • Define the scope and practice of use of medications during neonatal resuscitation.
  • Review special situations in neonatal resuscitation; Translate these skills & knowledge for use as needed outside the delivery room.
  • Differentiate the indications and skills required in neonatal resuscitation for a preterm delivery.

Complete all the online components of the program, including the Online Learning Assessment (Adaptive eLearning) and the Advanced Exam (35 questions). These online components will assess and verify your foundational knowledge of the Neonatal Resuscitation Program Advanced Provider curriculum.

Continuing Education Credits

Physician Provider The American Academy of Pediatrics is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians. The AAP designates this enduring material for a maximum of 12.00 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. This activity is acceptable for a maximum of 12.00 AAP credits. These credits can be applied toward the AAP CMP/CPD Award available to Fellows and Candidate Members of the AAP. Physician Assistant Provider The American Academy of Physician Assistants accepts AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)™ from organizations accredited by the ACCME. Physician assistants may receive a maximum of 12.00 hours of Category 1 credit for completing this program. Nurse Practitioner Provider This program is accredited for 12.00 NAPNAP CE contact hours of which 0.00 contain pharmacology (Rx) content, 0.00 related to psychopharmacology) 0.00 related to controlled substances), per the National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners (NAPNAP) Continuing Education Guidelines. The AAP is designated as Agency #A17. Upon completion of the program, each participant desiring NAPNAP contact hours should send a completed certificate of attendance, along with the required recording fee ($15 for NAPNAP members and nonmembers), to the NAPNAP National Office at 5 Hanover Square, Suite 1401, New York, NY 10004. Learning Activities in Part 2

              Instructor Led Event

Description

Upon completion of the online activities, you will need to register for an ADVANCED instructor led event that offers the opportunity to practice/review advanced resuscitation skills and participate in simulation/debriefing that focuses on critical leadership, communication, and teamwork skills. Passing all assignments is required for issuance of an NRP Advanced Provider eCard.

The PALS Course is designed to teach you the lifesaving skills required to be both a team member and a Team Leader in either an in-hospital or out-of-hospital setting. Because the PALS Course covers extensive material in a short time, you will need to prepare for the course beforehand.

Precourse Requirements

You should prepare for class by doing the following:

  1. Review and understand the information in your PALS Provider Manual.
  2. Review, understand, and pass the mandatory precourse self-assessment.
  3. Ensure that your BLS skills and knowledge are current for the resuscitation scenarios. You will be tested on child and infant high-quality BLS skills using a feedback manikin at the beginning of the PALS Course. You must know this in advance because you will not be taught how to do CPR or use an AED.

What to Bring and What to Wear

Bring your PALS Provider Manual to each class. You will need it during each lesson in the course. You may wish to purchase the 2020 Handbook of Emergency Cardiovascular Care for Healthcare Providers (optional), which you may bring to class to use as a reference guide during some of the stations in the course.

Please wear loose, comfortable clothing to class. You will be practicing skills that require you to work on your hands and knees, and the course requires bending, standing, and lifting. If you have any physical condition that might prevent you from engaging in these activities, please tell an instructor. The instructor may be able to adjust the equipment if you have back, knee, or hip problems.

ACLS 2-Day Initial Provider Class: an in-person class designed for staff who have never taken ACLS before or previously-certified staff who prefer a more in-depth review of ACLS algorithms and megacode practice.
